Would adalah bagian dari modal verb dan diikuti oleh infinitive without 'to'. "Would" sering disingkat dengan 'd.

Would digunakan dalam bentuk Conditional yang berbeda-beda tipe:

Dalam reported speech 'will' diganti menjadi would:

I will be there! She said she would be there.
I won't be able to come with you on Saturday. He said he wouldn't be able to come with us on Saturday.
Will you do me a favour? She asked if I would do her a favour.

REQUEST & OFFER

Gunakan would untuk menyuruh orang lain melakukan sesuatu:

Would you do me a favour?
Would you mind opening the window?

Untuk menawarkan atau mengundang orang lain, gunakan Would you like …?

Would you like me to get you something while I'm at the shop?
Would you like to come with me to the cinema?

PAST FUTURE

Fungsi kata "would" pada Past Future adalah "Anda pikir di masa lampau sesuatu akan terjadi di masa yang akan datang". Contohnya "Kemarin Anda pikir hari ini Presiden Amerika akan datang ke Indonesia. Hari ini pada hari kemarin adalah "future". Itulah Past Future.

Kata wish sama artinya dengan ekspresi "would like":

Fungsi utama dari kata "wish" adalah untuk mengekspresikan penyesalan.

Tenses yang mengikuti wish sama dengan second dan third conditionals.

Will vs Going to

Kalau kita ingin berbicara tentang kenyataan di masa yang akan datang, atau kita percaya bahwa sesuatu itu akan menjadi kenyataan di masa mendatang, maka gunakanlah 'will'.

The President will serve for four years.
The boss won't be very happy.
I'm sure you'll like her.
I'm certain he'll do a good job.

Kalau kita tidak yakin, gunakan 'will' dengan ekspresi seperti 'probably', 'possibly', 'I think', 'I hope'.

I hope you'll visit me in my home one day.
She'll probably be a great success.
I'll possibly come but I may not get back in time.
I think we'll get on well.

Namun jika kita membuat prediksi di masa mendatang berdasarkan fakta yang ada pada saat sekarang, maka gunakanlah 'going to'.

Not a cloud in the sky. It's going to be another warm day.
Look at the queue. We're not going to get in for hours.
The traffic is terrible. We're going to miss our flight.
Be careful! You're going to spill your coffee.

Kita membuat keputusan mendadak pada saat bicara (tidak ada rencana sebelumnya), maka gunakanlah 'will'. Namun kalau sudah direncanakan dengan matang, gunakanlah 'going to'.

I'll call Jenny to let her know. Sarah, I need Jenny's number. I'm going to call her about the meeting.
I'll come and have a drink with you but I must let Harry know. Harry, I'm going to have a drink with Simon.

When vs While

when dan while artinya sama-sama "ketika" dan dapat digunakan untuk menjelaskan 2 peristiwa yang terjadi pada saat yang bersamaan.

Kita dapat menggunakan kedua kata tersebut untuk menggambarkan suatu "latar belakang" peristiwa yang berlangsung lebih lama ketika peristiwa lain terjadi.

Somebody knocked the door when I was cooking in the kitchen. (=When I was cooking in the kitchen, somebody knocked the door)
While they were playing cards, somebody broke into the house.

CATATAN ISMAIL

Pada contoh di atas, kita melihat masing-masing contoh memiliki 2 kalimat. Misalnya contoh kalimat pertama. Pada kalimat pertama, kita melihat ada 2 kalimat, yaitu "somebody knocked the door" dan "I was cooking in the kitchen". Tentu kita dapat menyimpulkan bahwa memasak di dapur prosesnya lebih lama dari pada mengetuk pintu. Oleh karena itu, kata "when" diletakkan sebelum "I was cooking in the kitchen" bukan di depan "somebody knocked at the door", karena prosesnya memang lebih pendek.
when dan while dapat diletakkan di awal atau di akhir kalimat.

Kejadian Yang Sama-sama Berlangsung Lama dan Terjadi Bersamaan

Kita biasanya menggunakan while untuk mengatakan bahwa ada 2 kejadian atau situasi yang terjadi bersamaan (pada waktu yang sama).

While you were reading the paper, I was working.

Kalau kita membicarakan tentang masa di waktu ampau, gunakan when:

When I was a child we lived in London (BUKAN While I was a child …)
His parents died when he was twelve (BUKAN… while he was twelve)

Kejadian Yang Sama-sama Berlangsung Singkat dan Terjadi Bersamaan

Kita gunakan (just) when untuk mengatakan bahwa ada 2 kejadian/situasi yang sama-sama berlangsung singkat dan terjadi pada waktu yang bersamaan:

I thought of it (just) when you opened your mouth.(BUKAN I thought of it while opened your mouth)

Klausa Yang Dihilangkan

Boleh juga kita menghilangkan struktur "subject + be" setelah when dan while:

While/When in Germany, he got to know a family of musicians. (=While/When he was in Germany …)

While vs whilst

Tidak ada perbedaan antara kedua kata tersebut. Dalam British English, kata "whilst" dianggap lebih resmi dalam literatur dari pada "while".

Verbs (kata kerja) adalah kata yang menunjukkan nama perbuatan yang dilakukan oleh subyek, namun mungkin juga untuk menunjukkan keadaan.

1. Finite Verb (Kata Kerja Biasa)
Ciri-ciri Kata Kerja Jenis ini adalah sebagai berikut:

Bila dipakai dalam kalimat tanya dan negative perlu memakai kata kerja bantu do, does atau did.
Bentuknya dapat berubah-ubah oleh tense.

Yaitu kata kerja yang berfungsi menghubungkan antara subject dengan complement-nya. Kata yang dihubungkan dengan subject tersebut dinamakan subject complement. Jika kata Kerja Penghubung tersebut kita gantikan dengan be (am, is, are, was, dll.), maka maknanya tidak berubah.

Yaitu kata kerja yang memerlukan object untuk menyempurnakan arti kalimat atau melengkapi makna kalimat.
Kata kerja Transitive diantaranya adalah:
Drink, watch, read, fill, open, close, dll
Contoh:

He watches the film. (Kalimat ini tidak akan lengkap, jika “the film” kita hilangkan. Orang lain akan bertanya-tanya – menonton apa?, maka watch (menonton) membutuhkan object agar makna kalimat tersebut dapat dipahami).
The man cuts the tree.

5. Intransitive Verbs (Kata Kerja Yang Tidak Membutuhkan Objek)

Yaitu adalah kata kerja yang tidak memerlukan obyek, karena sudah dapat dipahami dengan sempurna makna kalimat tersebut.

Kata-kata kerja yang termasuk Intransitive verbs diantaranya adalah:
Shine, come, sit, boil, sleep, fall, cry, dll.

Contoh:

The baby cries.
My mother is sleeping.
The water boils.

Catatan:

Ada juga beberapa kata kerja yang dapat berfungsi sebagai transitive maupun intransitive verbs.

Contoh:

He drops his bottles. (transitif)
The rain drops from the sky. (intransitif)
The contestants still misunderstood then. (transitif)
The contestants still misunderstood. (intransitif)
They grow the rubber trees. (transitif)
Rice grows in the fertile soil. (intransitif)

Ada beberapa verb intransitive yang memakai Objective Noun yang mempunyai satu kesatuan makna dengan kata kerjanya. Objeknya disebut Cognate Object.

Contoh:

He played the fool. (Dia bermain gila-gilaan).
He laughs a hard laugh. (Dia tertawa lebar).
He slept a sound sleep. (Dia tidur nyenyak).
He died a miserable death. (Dia mati melarat).

Ada beberapa verb transitive dan intransitive walaupun sudah mempunyai object tetapi artinya belum sempuma sebelum ditambah kata-kata lain.

Kata Kerja jenis ini diantaranya adalah:
make, name, call, find, declare, suppose, consider, bring, give, appoint, seen, hear, dll.

Contoh:

I will make you happy.
I appoint him to be my assistant.

Ada juga kata kerja yang mempunyai pola sebagai berikut:

Contoh:

Regular Verb adalah kata kerja yang dapat berubah-ubah sesuai dengan bentuk tense; dan perubahan bentuk kata kerja itu secara teratur.

Used to do

Kita pakai ‘used to’ untuk sesuatu yang terjadi secara reguler di masa yang lampau namun kejadiannya tidak lama.

I used to smoke a packet a day but I stopped two years ago.
Ben used to travel a lot in his job but now, since his promotion, he doesn’t.
I used to drive to work but now I take the bus.

Kita juga bisa memakainya untuk sesuatu yang dulunya benar, namun tidak bertahan lama.

There used to be a cinema in the town but now there isn’t.
She used to have really long hair but she’s had it all cut off.
I didn’t use to like him but now I do.

to be used to doing

Untuk menjelaskan situasi atau kejadian yang biasa.

I’m used to living on my own. I’ve done it for quite a long time.
Hans has lived in England for over a year so he is used to driving on the left now.

Untuk membicarakan suatu proses sesuatu yang menjadi normal/biasa buat kita.

Penggunaan Subjunctive

Kita menggunakan subjunctives ketika kita berbicara tentang suatu kegiatan yang sebenarnya tidak akan terjadi. Kita menggunakan subjunctive ketika berbicara tentang kegiatan yang seseorang:

Harapkan akan terjadi
Membayangkan akan terjadi

Contoh:

The President requests that you be present at the meeting.
It is vital that you be present at the meeting.
If you were at the meeting, the President would be happy.

Subjunctive biasanya menggunakan kedua struktur berikut:

Kata Kerja: ask, command, demand, insist, propose, recommend, request, suggest + that
Ekspresi: it is desirable, essential, important, necessary, vital + that

Contoh:

The manager insists that the car park be locked at night.
The board of directors recommended that he join the company.
It is essential that we vote as soon as possible.
It was necessary that every student submit his essay by the weekend.

Perhatikan bahwa struktur berikut ini, subjunctive-nya sama. Tidak masalah kalimat itu tenses-nya past atau present. Contoh:

Present: The President requests that they stop the occupation.
Past: The President requested that they stop the occupation.

Present: It is essential that she be present.
Past: It was essential that she be present.

Kita selalu menggunakan were sebagai pengganti “was” setelah if (dan kata lainnya yang memiliki arti yang sama). Contoh:

If I were you, I would ask her.
Suppose she were here. What would you say?

Mengapa kita menggunakan “I were”, “he were”?

Kita sering mendengar orang berkata “if I were you, I would go” atau “if he were here, he would tell you”. Memang normalnya adalah: I was, he was. Tetapi struktur if I were you tidak melihat Past Tense”. Struktur tersebut hanya mengenal past subjunctive untuk “to be” nya. Perhatikan contoh kata-kata/frase di bawah ini untuk struktur di atas:

1. Rumus

Untuk membentuk Simple Present Tense, maka gunakan rumus berikut ini:

1) Subjek + kata kerja (+s/es) + dll

2) Subjek + is/am/are + dll

CATATAN:

(1) Kita gunakan Rumus Pertama, jika kita mendapati kata kerja setelah subjek kalimat.

(2) Kata kerja tersebut harus ditambah dengan “s” atau “es” jika subjek kalimatnya adalah He, She, It.

(3) Penambahan kata “s” dan “es” akan dibahas di bawah.

(4) Namun apabila setelah subjek kita tidak mendapati adanya kata kerja, maka gunakan is, am, are.

(5) Penggunaan ketiga kata tersebut akan dibahas di bawah.

2) Kalimat Negative:

(1) Untuk membuat kalimat Negatif, gunakan do/does jika Predikat kalimatnya adalah kata kerja, kemudian tambahkan not sesudahnya.

(2) Apabila does sudah kita gunakan (baik kalimat negative, maupun kalimat Tanya), maka kata kerja kembali lagi ke bentuk semula. (tanpa akhiran s atau es).

(3) Apabila setelah subjek kalimat tidak terdapat kata kerja, maka tambahkan saja not setelah is, am, are.

1) Kata Kerja yang berakhiran bunyi desis, seperti s, ss, ch, x, z, dll, maka tambahkan “es” sesudahnya.

2) Kata Kerja yang berakhiran huruf “O” juga ditambah dengan “es”.

3) Kata Kerja yang berakhiran dengan “y”, namun huruf sebelumnya adalah huruf vocal, maka tambahkan “s”.

5. Fungsi Simple Present

1) Menyatakan suatu perbuatan yang dilakukan tidak hanya sekali, hampir seperti suatu kebiasaan (berulang-ulang).

2) Menyatakan suatu perbuatan atau kejadian yang merupakan kebenaran umum atau tidak dapat dibantah lagi kebenarannya.

3) Menyatakan suatu kegiatan yang sudah terjadwal.

· The plane flies to London every Monday.

· The train leaves for Manchester at 7.

4) Menyatakan suatu perbuatan atau aktivitas yang mengikuti aktivitas yang lainnya.

Kita menggunakan Tense ini ketika tidak ada rencana atau keputusan untuk melakukan sesuatu sebelum kita berbicara. Kita membuat keputusannya secara spontan pada saat bicara. Perhatikan contoh berikut:

Hold on. I‘ll get a pen.
We will see what we can do to help you.
Maybe we‘ll stay in and watch television tonight.

b. Prediksi

Kita sering menggunakan Tense ini untuk membaut prediksi di masa mendatang. Lagi-lagi tidak ada rencana. Kita hanya berusaha mengucapkan apa yang kita fikir akan terjadi. Contoh:

It will rain tomorrow.
People won’t go to Jupiter before the 22nd century.
Who do you think will get the job?

KALIMAT NON-VERBAL

Ketika predikat suatu kalimat bukan kata kerja, maka gunakan be untuk menggantikan kata kerja tersebut. Contoh:

I‘ll be in London tomorrow.
I’m going shopping. I won’t be very long.
Will you be at work tomorrow?

Catatan:

Kita menggunakan 'should have' untuk menyatakan peristiwa yang telah terjadi di masa lampau.

I should have let her know what was happening but I forgot.
He should have sent everybody a reminder by email.
They should have remembered that their guests don't eat pork.

Kita juga menggunakan 'should have' untuk berspekulasi tentang suatu peristiwa yang mungkin telah terjadi atau mungkin juga tidak terjadi di masa lampau.

She should have got the letter this morning. I expect she'll give us a call about it later.
He should have arrived at his office by now. Let's try ringing him.
They should have all read that first email by this stage. It's time to send the next one.

Kita memakai 'should not have' untuk berspekulasi secara negatif tentang apa yang mungkin telah terjadi atau mungkin juga tidak terjadi.

Gunakan juga 'should' untuk memberikan pendapat atau rekomendasi.

We should invest more in China.
They should do something about this terrible train service.
He should resign.

'Should' itu digunakan untuk mengekspresikan pendapat pribadi dan sering didahului dengan 'I think'.

I think they should replace him.
I don't think they should keep the contract.
Do you think I should tell her?

Kita memakai 'should' setelah 'reporting verbs' seperti demand, insist, propose, recommend, dan suggest

ANGAN gunakan kata 'Shall' dalam Bahasa Inggris, khususnya American English.

Kata "Shall" digunakan untuk menawarkan sesuatu dan menyarankan sesuatu.

What time shall we meet?
Shall we vote on it now?
What dress shall I wear?
Shall I open the window?

Dalam Grammar kuno , 'shall' digunakan sebagai pengganti 'will' dengan subjeknya 'I' dan 'we'. Namun sekarang kata 'will' selalu digunakan. Kalau kita memakai kata 'shall', berarti kita memiliki ide yang agak pribadi atau keinginan di masa mendatang.

I shall go to see the boss and I shall ask him to explain this decision.

Bentuk negatif dari 'shall' adalah 'shall not' atau 'shan't' –Namun bentuk yang kedua ini agak jarang dalam American English.

Sentence (kalimat) adalah sekumpulan kata yang mempunyai makna yang dapat dipahami dan memiliki sedikitnya Subjek dan Predikat.

Unsur-unsur Kalimat

1. Subject

Subjek adalah seseorang atau sesuatu yang menjadi bahan pembicaraan.

Contoh:

Jack has called the police. (Jack = Subject)
The novel is on the table. (The novel = Subject)

Yang dapat menjadi subject kalimat adalah:

A. Simple Sentence, yang dapat dibentuk oleh:

1. Nouns (Kata Benda)

Birds are fowl.
Indonesia has the largest amount of Moslem in the world.

2. Pronouns (Kata Ganti)

He cut my hair yesterday.
They had discussed the matter before the chairman left.

3. Adjectives as Nouns (Kata Sifat Yang Berfungsi Sebagai Kata Benda)

The poor needs helping.
The unemployed are hopeless.

4. Infinitives as Nouns (Infinitif yang berfungsi sebagai kata benda)

To pass the exam is first priority.
To say is easy but to do is difficult.

5. Participles as Nouns (Participle yang berfungsi sebagai kata benda)

Swimming is my hobby.
Smoking is really bad for your health.

B. Compound Subject

Compound Subject terdiri dari 2 atau lebih yang menjadi satu kesatuan makna.

The plane leaves at 7.
His brother’s father-in-law passed away two days ago.

Pada saat suatu kalimat tidak memiliki subjek, maka IT dan THERE berfungsi sebagai subject kalimatnya. Pada saat kita berbicara “panas sekali hari ini”, maka kita akan menyatakannya dengan “It is very hot today”.

It is Sunday today.
There is a good show today.

2. Predicate

Predicate adalah kata yang menerangkan keadaan subject kalimat. Dalam Bahsa Inggris, jika suatu kalimat tidak memiliki Predicate kata kerja, maka posisi kata kerjanya harus digantikan dengan auxiliary (kata kerja Bantu).

Contoh Kalimat Verbal (Kalimat yang predikatnya adalah kata kerja)

Mr. Henry teaches us English.
The dog slept under a tree.

Contoh Kalimat Non-Verbal (kalimat yang predikatnya bukan kata kerja)

Kalimat Non-Verbal ini terdiri dari:

a. Nominal Sentence (Kalimat yang predikatnya kata benda)

She is a teacher.
My parents are doctors.

b. Adjectival Sentence (Kalimat yang predikatnya kata sifat)

The boy is sick.
Alex and Ed are diligent.

c. Adverbial Sentence (Kalimat yang predikatnya adalah kata keterangan)

The coffee is too hot to drink.
She is usually at home on Sundays.

d. Prepositional Sentence (Kalimat yang predikatnya adalah kata depan)

My mother is at home today.
The book is on the table.

3. Object

Object (Penderita) adalah kata yang menjadi sasaran apa yang dilakukan oleh subject.
Namun, tidak semua kata kerja memiliki objek. Hanya kata kerja transitif saja yang membutuhkan objek. Sedangkan kata kerja intransitif tidak membutuhkan objek, seperti menangis, mendidih, berjalan, dll.

Kadangkala sebuah kalimat memiliki 2 object. Perhatikan contoh kalimat berikut ini:

Andy gives me a book.

Me = Objek tak langsung (Indirect Object)
A book = Objek langsung (Direct Object)

Untuk menandai yang mana objek langsung maupun tidak langsung cukuplah mudah. Kita harus tahu object dari predicate kalimat itu apa? Maka itulah objek langsungnya.

Andy memberikan apa? Sebuah Buku

Maka, a book adalah direct object. Kalimat tersebut dapat juga dibentuk dengan:

Andy gives a book to me.

Untuk lebih jelasnya, marilah perhatikan pembahasan mengenai Direct dan Indirect object berikut ini:

Direct Object

Direct Object adalah penderita langsung dari suatu tindakan di dalam satu kalimat. Contohnya, He hits the ball. Namun kita harus berhati-hati untuk membedakan antara Direct Object dengan Object Complement.
Perhatikan contoh berikut ini:

They named their daughter Elizabeth.

Dalam kalimat ini, “daughter” adalah Direct Object dan “Elizabeth” adalah Object Complement, yang menggambarkan atau memberikan penjelasan dari direct object-nya.

Indirect Object

Indirect Object mengindentifikasikan untuk siapa tindakan tersebut dilakukan. Direct dan Indirect Object dapat berupa orang, tempat, atau sesuatu yang berbeda.

Perhatikan kembali contoh berikut ini untuk membedakan antara direct dan indirect object. Yang bercetak tebal adalah Direct Object dan yang bercetak miring adalah Indirect Object.

Indirect Object dapat digunakan dalam beberapa cara seperti berikut ini:

4. Complement

Complement (pelengkap) adalah kata yang melengkapi maksud dari kata kerja (predikat) dalam suatu kalimat.

Dalam Bahasa Inggris, complement dibagi menjadi 2 bagian, yaitu:

Subjective Complement, yaitu kata yang melengkapi subjek dari sebuah kalimat.
Objective Complement, yaitu kata yang melengkapi objek dari sebuah kalimat.

5. Adjunct

Adjunct adalah kata yang menerangkan tentang object atau subject kalimat. Adjuct ini biasanya terdiri dari keterangan tambahan seperti keterangan waktu, tempat, dll.

I usually drink a cup of coffee in the morning.
She came here yesterday.
I go to school by bus.

Klasifikasi Kalimat

Berdasarkan penggunaannya, kalimat terbagi atas:

A.1 Declarative Sentence, yaitu kalimat berita/pernyataan, positif maupun negatif, benar maupun bohong.

We are happy.
She is not at home today

A.2 Interrogative Sentence, yaitu Kalimat Tanya.
Kalimat Tanya terbagi lagi atas:
A.2.1 Yes/No Question, yaitu pertanyaan yang jawabannya ya atau tidak.

Cara untuk membuat Yes/No Question adalah sbb:

Hitunglah jumlah kata kerjanya dulu.

Perhatikan kelima contoh kalimat diatas!. Bahwa kita tidak menggunakan do, does, atau did setelah who. Sedangkan do, does, did dipakai untuk selainnya.

A.2.3 Embedded Question adalah pertanyaan yang ada di dalam suatu pernyataan lain.

Contoh pertanyaan seperti dalam Bahasa Indonesia adalah “saya tidak tahu apakah dia mau pergi atau tidak.”
Ada 2 cara untuk membentuk Embedded Question, yaitu:

Jika di dalam suatu pernyataan terdapat kalimat Tanya (8W 1 H), maka gunakan langsung kata Tanya tersebut.
Jika tidak terdapat kata Tanya, maka gunakan “whether” untuk menggantikan kata “apakah”.

Catatan:
Susunan kalimat setelah kata Tanya dan “whether” dalam Embedded Question harus kembali ke dalam susunan normal ( S + V + dll) dan tidak ada tanda tanya di akhir kalimat.

Contoh:

“Saya tidak tahu dimana Alex tinggal”

I do not know where Alex lives. (benar)
I do not know where does Alex live. (salah)
I do not know where Alex lives ? (salah)
I do not know where does Alex live? (salah)

“Ibu saya ingin tahu apakah kalian akan pergi besok.”

My mother wonders whether you will go tomorrow. (benar)
My mother wonders will you go tomorrow. (salah)

A.3 Imperative Sentence, yaitu Kalimat perintah yang mencakup kalimat permohonan, do’a dan sebagainya.

Bentuk kalimat ini subjek kalimatnya adalah “you”, namun dalam penulisan dan pengucapan selalu tidak disebutkan. Kemudian kata “please” biasanya ditambahkan di awal atau akhir kalimat. Namun kalau “please” diletakkan di akhir kalimat, maka didahului oleh “koma”. Selain itu, di akhir kalimat selalu ditambahkan “tanda seru” jika “please” ada di awal kalimat dan “tanda Tanya” jika “please” ada di akhir kalimat.

1. Positive Imperative

a. Diawali dengan kata kerja

Open the door, please?
Please pass me the sugar!

Perbedaan antara “please” di awal kalimat dengan di akhir kalimat adalah sebagai berikut:

“Please” di awal kalimat berarti perintah, dan
“Please” di akhir kalimat berarti sebuah permintaan.

b. Diawali dengan selain kata kerja

Be careful, please?
Please be patient!

2. Negative Imperative (Larangan)

a. Diawali dengan kata kerja

Please don’t spit on the floor!
Don’t smoke here, please?

b. Diawali dengan selain kata kerja

Don’t be lazy!
Don’t be late!

A.4 Exclamatory Sentence, yaitu Kalimat yang menyatakan seruan, terkejut, marah dll yang bersifat spontan.

Setidaknya ada 3 pola untuk membentuk kalimat seru ini, yaitu:

What + Noun (phrase) + Subject + Verb (untuk Nouns jamak dan tidak dapat dihitung)
What a + Noun (phrase) (untuk Nouns tunggal dan dapat dihitung)
How + Adjectives/Adverbs (phrase) + Subject + verb

Contoh:

What beautiful cars you have!
What a lovely girl she is!
How beautiful you are!

Exclamatory sentence dapat juga berupa ungkapan-ungkapan kata seru (interjection, yang akan dijelaskan di belakang)
Contoh:

God heaven!
May god bless you!
Thank God!

Berdasarkan Struktur kalimatnya, kalimat terbagi atas:

1. Simple Sentence (Kalimat Sederhana)

Yaitu kalimat yang memiliki 1 gagasan atau ide bicara saja. Artinya kalimat yang hanya terdiri dari 1 kata kerja utama saja.

Contoh:

A teacher teaches in front of the class
The students listen their teacher carefully
We can’t make him come early.

2. Compound Sentence (Kalimat Majemuk)

Yaitu kalimat yang terdiri dari 2 ide pembicaraan yang disatukan oleh kata sambung (Conjunctions). Kalimat ini terdiri dari induk kalimat dan anak kalimat. Anak kalimat dimulai dengan kata sambung seperti and, but, because, when, while, for, since, dll.

Contoh:

Anne is diligent but her sister isn’t.
I will buy a car if my mother gives me the money today.
She can pass the exam because she studies hard.

Kalimat yang bercetak miring di atas adalah anak kalimat. Anak kalimat adalah apabila kalimat tersebut berdiri sendiri (tanpa induk kalimatnya), kalimat tersebut tidak dapat dimengerti maksudnya. (but her sister isn’t = tetapi kakaknya tidak). Pada kalimat tersebut, kita tidak mengerti begitu saja maksudnya tanpa induk kalimatnya.

3. Complex Sentence (Kalimat Sempurna)

Yaitu kalimat yang hampir sama dengan kalimat majemuk, namun bisa terdiri dari lebih dari 1 anak kalimat dan dihubungkan dengan kata penghubung (Relative Pronouns) seperti who, whom, whose, that, dan which.

Contoh:

The man who cuts my hair is my uncle.
I am waiting for the boy whom you are talking about.
The house of which door is brown is mine.

4. Compound-complex Sentence (Kalimat majemuk sempurna)

Yaitu kalimat yang merupakan gabungan dan kombinasi dari kedua kalimat di atas, yaitu kalimat yang terdiri dari 1 atau lebih induk kalimat dan 1 atau lebih anak kalimat.

Contoh:

I have just phoned Ted who had told you that he would come to your house tomorrow and asked him to bring his wife along.
Jack whose mother teaches you English wants to come to my house today although I have told him that I will not be at home today because I have had an appointment with anybody.
Even though I have studied hard every day, but I can’t pass the exam which is given to me.

Penggunaan kata say dan tell lebih jelasnya dapat dilihat pada materi Reported Speech. :

"I am going to the shop." - He said (that) he was going to the shop.
"Sit down and open your books." - She told us to sit down and open our books.
"Will you come with us tomorrow?" - He asked me if I would go with them the following day.

Namun, Orang-orang Inggris dan Amerika, jarang menggunakan kata-kata tersebut dalam Reporting Verbs. Mereka sering menggunakan kata lain untuk mengantikan say dan tell. Perhatikan contoh berikut ini:

"I didn't do it!" - He said that he hadn't done it.
(= He denied doing it.)
"I'll bring the book back tomorrow." - She said that she would bring the book back the following day.
(= She promised to bring the book back the following day.)
"Please will you think about it some more?" - He asked me if I would think about it some more.

Walaupun arti keduanya sama-sama "naik", namun perbedaannya adalah rise adalah intransitive verb (tidak membutuhkan objek), sedangkan raise adalah transitive verb (membutuhkan objek):

Question Tag adalah pertanyaan pendek yang ada di akhir kalimat. Dalam bahasa Indonesia, mungkin kita sering mendengar orang berkata, kamu terlambat, kan?. Nah kata “kan?” di sini disebut dengan question tag dalam bahasa Inggris.

Pada topic ini kita akan membahas tentang:

1. Positive Statement

Rumus:

(+) statement, (-) tag?

a. Dengan Kata Bantu (Auxiliary)

Contoh:

You are the new secretary, aren’t you? (bukan are not you?)
George can swim well, can’t he?
I am going to go to the cinema with you, aren’t I? (bukan amn’t I)
Susie has phoned you, hasn’t she?

Catatan penting:

Jika kita dapat melihat adanya kata Bantu (is, am, are, was, were, do, does, did, has, have, had, will, would, can, could, shall, should, may, might, atau must), maka gunakan saja kata Bantu tersebut sebagai tagnya.
Tag negative harus dibentuk dengan singkatan. Pengguaan not yang terpisah dari kata bantunya tidak umum dalam Question tag.
Jika subjek kalimatnya I, dan kata bantunya am, maka tagnya adalah aren’t I? bukan “amn’t I” sebab penyingkatan ini tidak standard dalam bahasa Inggris.
Berhati-hatilah dengan penyingkatan kata Bantu. Perhatikan contoh kalimat-kalimat berikut ini:

She’s afraid to stay alone, isn’t she?
She’s called the police, hasn’t she?

Pada kalimat pertama, she’s = she is, sebab diikuti oleh kata sifat, sedangkan pada kalimat kedua she’s = she has, sebab diikuti oleh kata kerja bentuk ke-3 (Present Perfect Tense)

b. Tanpa Kata Bantu (Auxiliary)

Contoh:

They invited you to their party, didn’t they?
She read the novel, didn’t she?
She reads the novel, doesn’t she?
Somebody knocked at the door, didn’t they?
You think I will be fired, don’t you?
I believe you will pass the exam, won’t you?

Catatan penting:

Jika tidak ada auxiliary (kata Bantu) di dalam kalimat statement-nya, maka gunakan do, does, atau did, tergantung dari tenses-nya.
Berhati-hati dengan kata kerja Irregular Verbs, terutama yang memiliki bentuk yang sama seperti contoh kalimat no. 2 dan 3 di atas.
Somebody/someone, anybody/anyone, everybody/everyone, these/those dianggap menjadi “they” dalam tagnya.
Something, anything, everything, this/that dianggap menjadi “it” dalam tagnya.
Jika statement-nya terdiri dari induk dan anak kalimat, maka tag-nya diambil dari induk kalimatnya (contoh kalimat ke-5), kecuali jika induk kalimatnya dimulai dengan I, maka tag-nya diambil dari anak kalimatnya (contoh kalimat ke-6). Hal ini sangat masuk akal kita, kan tidak lucu kalau kita bertanya pada diri kita sendiri. (Saya percaya kamu akan lulus ujian, ya kan? – tetapi ya kan-nya ditujukan pada diri sendiri)

2. Negative Statement

Negative statement jauh lebih mudah dibandingkan dengan positive statement karena kita sudah melihat adanya kata Bantu di dalam statement-nya. Kita tinggal memindahkan kata Bantu tersebut ke dalam tagnya.

Negative statement biasanya sering dipakai untuk meminta tolong atau meminta informasi tentang sesuatu/seseorang.

Rumus:

Contoh:

There isn’t any news, is there?
My parents won’t go to Bali with you, will they?
Nobody wants to go with you, do they?
Everybody does not bring their homework, do they?
You never come to her dormitory, do you?

Catatan penting:

Nobody, nothing dianggap negative
Nobody dianggap menjadi they dalam tagnya dan nothing dianggap menjadi it dalam tagnya.
Hati-hati jangan sampai terlena dengan kata Bantu yang nampak dalam statement-nya. Perhatikan contoh kalimat no. 3 dan 4. Kata kerjanya seolah-olah adalah tunggal dan seharusnya menggunakan does, namun mengapa tag-nya menggunakan do? Sebab nobody dan everybody dianggap they dalam tag-nya.
Never, seldom, barely, little, few, dll dianggap negative (contoh kalimat no. 5)
Namun ingat, a few, dan a little dianggap positive.

3. Imperative Statement

Imperative statement biasanya digunakan untuk meminta dan menyuruh orang lain untuk mengerjakan sesuatu. Ada juga yang berfungsi untuk melarang dan mengajak orang lain.

Tag yang digunakan adalah:

Will you, won’t you, would you, could you, can you, dll yang sejenis. Penggunaannya tergantung dari situasi kalimatnya dan tingkat kesopanan statement yang disampaikan. Misalnya kalau meminta orang lain untuk mengerjakan sesuatu, lebih baik gunakan would you atau sejenisnya, dan menyuruh seseorang dengan nada marah, maka can you akan lebih cocok digunakan daripada would you.
Sedangkan untuk let’s, tag yang digunakan adalah shall we?

Contoh:

Sit down, would you?
Let’s do it again, shall we?
Don’t disturb me, can’t you?

Catatan penting:

Penggunaan tag di atas sama penggunaanya dan dapat digantikan dengan please.

Contoh:

Sit down, please?
Let’s do it again, please?

Ellipsis Question Tag

Berhati-hatilah dengan penggunaan Question tag, khususnya jika kita tidak dapat melihat adanya subjek kalimat dalam statement-nya. Untuk itu, kita perlu memahami dan mencermati bahwa subjek kalimat statement-nya sebenarnya ada, namun hilang (ellipsis). Perhatikan contoh kalimat-kalimat berikut ini:

Nice day, isn’t it?
Difficult, aren’t they?
Talking about me, aren’t you?
Fine, aren’t you?

1. Tanda Kurung

Tanda kurung memberikan tambahan informasi atau penjelasan tambahan atas sebuah kalimat yang dipotongnya.

Catatan:

Titik, Tanda tanya atau Tanda Seru biasanya diletakkan di luar tanda kurung (kecuali kalau tanda kurungnya menutup sebuah kalimat lenkap).
Informasi tambahan dimasukkan dalam sebuah tanda kurung jika informasinya tidak begitu penting untuk diketahui dalam kalimat tersebut. Artinya tanpa informasi itu pun, orang lain sudah tahu maksudnya.

Soekarno (presiden pertama Indonesia) merupakan proklamator Indonesia.

Catatan:

Tergantung penting atau tidaknya informasi itu, informasi tambahan dapat dimasukkan dalam tanda kurung, koma atau tanda hubung.

Tanda Kurung – tidak begitu penting

Koma – netral

Connor, Amy's boyfriend, bought the tickets.

Tanda Hubung – penekanan

2. Koma

Peraturan utama dalam penggunaan Koma adalah: untuk menjaga kalimat Anda jelas. Terlalu banyak Koma pun akan membingungkan; terlalu sedikit pun tidak baik sebab dapat menyulitkan pembaca untuk mengerti maksud kalimat yang dibuat.

Perhatikan penggunaan koma berikut ini.

a. Koma dengan Informasi Tambahan

Gunakan tanda koma jika Informasi tambahannya bukan merupakan bagian utama kalimat itu.

Thank you, ladies and gentlemen, for giving me the opportunity to speak to you today.

Gunakan tanda koma dalam Relative Clauses sebelum who dan which jika Informasinya tidak begitu penting dalam kalimat yang diikutinya.

Bob’s wife, who works at a bank, came to my house yesterday.

Namun jangan koma dalam Relative Clauses jika Informasinya penting dalam kalimat itu.

Henry’s wife who works at a bank came to my house yesterday.

Keterangan:

1. Pada kedua contoh kalimat di atas, sudah jelas bahwa istrinya Henry lebih dari satu. Penulis ingin memberitahukan bahwa istrinya Henry yang bekerja di bank lah yang datang ke rumah saya kemarin, bukan istrinya yang lain.

2. Namun pada kalimat pertama, tanpa kita masukkan yang bekerja di sebuah bank pun orang lain sudah tahu kalau istrinya Bob memang bekerja di sebuah bank. Informasi yang diapit dalam 2 tanda koma tersebut tidak begitu penting.

3. Oleh karena itu, hati-hatilah dalam menggunakan koma di dalam Relative Clause.

b. Koma Dengan Kata Sifat (Adjectives)

Gunakan koma jika kata sifatnya sama pentingnya.

It was a cold, windy morning.

Namun jangan gunakan koma jika kata sifat yang ada tidak sama pentingnya dan memberikan jenis informasi yang berbeda.

He was a clever young man.

Catatan:

Untuk mengetahui apakah kata-kata sifat yang ada itu sama pentingnya atau tidak, letakkan saja and diantara kata-kata sifatnya. (It was a cold and windy morning.)
Jika kata-kata sifatnya memberikan informasi yang berbeda, penggunaan and diantara kata-kata sifat tersebut tidaklah tepat. (He was a clever and young man.)

c. Koma dengan Kata Keterangan (Adverbs)

Gunakan koma setelah kata-kata kerja tertentu seperti: however, in fact, therefore, nevertheless, moreover, furthermore, still, instead, too (juga).

Therefore, he didn't say a word.

Jika adverb-adverb ini ada di tengah kalimat, apitlah dengan Koma.

The thief, however, was very clever.

Koma boleh dipakai boleh juga tidak pada adverbs berikut: then, so, yet.

So, she entered the house.
So she entered the house.

d. Koma dengan Kalimat Pengandaian

Gunakan koma jika klausa if (anak kalimat) ada di awal kalimat.

If I go to London, I will visit the Tower.

Namun jangan gunakan koma jika anak kalimatnya berada setelah induk kalimatnya.

I will visit the Tower if I go to London.

e. Tanggal dalam Percakapan Bahasa Inggris

Jika Anda meletakkan tanggal sebelum bulannya, maka gunakan artikel the sebelum tanggalnya dan gunakan kata depan of sebelum bulannya.

Jika peletakan bulan dahulu baru tanggal, gunakan artikel the dalam British English. Dalam American English, artikel tersebut boleh tidak dipakai.

f. Tanggal dalam Penulisan Bahasa Inggris

British English

Dalam British English, tanggal biasanya diletakkan sebelum bulan. Anda boleh meletakkan tanda ordinal number seperti st (1, 21, 31), nd (2, 22), rd (3, 23), dan th (selainnya). Kata depan of boleh dihilangkan. Anda boleh meletakkan koma sebelum bilangan tahunnya, namun hal ini tidak lagi hal yang umum dalam British English. Namun suatu keharusan jika tanggal itu ada dalam sebuah kalimat seperti: The conference takes place 10-12 December, 2003.

5(th) (of) October(,) 2004

American English

Dalam American English, bulan biasanya diletakkan sebelum tanggal. Namun jika Anda ingin meletakkannya, Anda boleh meletakkan artikel the sebelum tanggal. Penulisan koma harus dilakukan sebelum bilangan tahun.

October (the) 5(th), 2004

Anda boleh menulis tanggal dengan nomor saja. Bentuk yang umum adalah sbb:

Catatan:

Hati-hatilah dalam menafsirkan penulisan 5/10/04 artinya 5 Oktober 2004 dalam British English dan 10 Mei 2004 dalam American English.

g. Koma dengan Kalimat Langsung

Gunakan koma setelah klausa pengantar.

She said, “I was in London last year.”

Jika kalimat langsungnya ada di awal kalimat, letakkan koma sebelum tanda seru. (jangan gunakan titik.)

“I was in London last year,” she said.

Jangan gunakan koma setelah kalimat langsung jika kalimat langsungnya berakhiran dengan Tanda tanya atau Tanda Seru.

“Were you in London last year?” he asked. (tetapit: He asked, “Were you in London last year?”)
“Great!” she replied. (tetapi: She replied, “Great!”)

h. Koma dengan Penyebutan Satu Persatu (Enumerasi)

Gunakan sebuah koma untuk memisahkan kata-kata yang harus disebutkan satu persatu.

Old McDonald had a pig, a dog, a cow, a horse.

Koma sebelum “and” boleh dipakai boleh juga tidak.

Old McDonald had a pig, a dog, a cow and a horse.
Old McDonald had a pig, a dog, a cow, and a horse.

Jangan gunakan koma sebelum “and” jika ada 2 item yang merupakan satu kesatuan.

Old McDonald had soup, ham and eggs and apple pie for dinner.
Old McDonald had soup, ham and eggs, and apple pie for dinner.

Jangan gunakan koma jika semua item dalam enumerasi dipisahkan oleh “and”, “or”, “nor” dll.

Old McDonald had a pig and a dog and a cow and a horse.
Old McDonald had a pig or a dog or a cow or a horse.
Old McDonald neither had a pig nor a dog nor a cow nor a horse.

i. Koma dengan Introductory Clause (Klausa Pengantar)

Gunakan sebuah koma setelah Introductory Infinitive Clause.

Gunakan sebuah koma setelah Introductory Prepositional Clause.

Before he went to New York, he had spent a year in Australia.

Penjelasan

1. Personal Pronouns

Yaitu kata ganti orang, baik orang pertama, orang kedua maupun orang ketiga. Personal Pronouns berfungsi sebagai:

a. Nominative Subjective, yaitu menjadi subjek kalimat. I, we, you, they, he, she, it.

I study English
You are my new secretary.

b. Objective, yaitu menjadi objek kalimat. Me, us, you, them, him, her, it.

She brings me a cup of coffee.
I make you a kite.

2. Demonstrative Pronouns (Kata Ganti Penunjuk)

This, that, those, these.
This is your book.
Those are my pencils.

Catatan:

Keempat kata di atas juga dapat dijumpai dalam Demonstrative Adjectives. Perbedaan penggunaannya hanya pada penggunaan kata benda (nouns) setelah keempat kata di atas untuk Demonstrative Adjectives.

3. Possessive Pronouns

Yaitu kata ganti yang menunjukkan kepemilikan. Mine, yours, theirs, ours, his, hers.

Yaitu kata yang menggantikan kata yang telah disebutkan sebelumnya.

5. Interrogative Pronouns

Yaitu kata Tanya yang digunakan untuk mengawali suatu pertanyaan.
Kata yang dipakai adalah who, what, whom, dan which.

6. Indefinite Pronouns (Kata Ganti Tak Tentu)

Kata-kata yang sering dipakai adalah: another, anybody, something, everyone, much, neither, one, none, dll.

7. Reflexive Pronouns

Yaitu kata ganti yang merupakan pantulan dari kata ganti (Pronouns) itu sendiri.

Perhatikan bentuk kata ganti jenis ini:

You = yourself (kamu)
You = yourselves (kalian)
We = ourselves
They = themselves
He = himself
She = herself
It = itself

I cut myself with a knife (saya kena pisau)

8. Intensive Pronouns

Yaitu kata ganti yang juga merupakan pantulan dari kata ganti itu sendiri. Namun, letaknya sesudah nouns/pronouns itu sendiri. Kata ganti jenis ini berfungsi untuk lebih menekankan / menegaskan maksud pembicaraan.

Contoh:

Henry himself who told me so. (Henry sendirilah yang mengatakan begitu kepadaku)
Mary herself repaired the computer. (Mary sendirilah – bukan orang lain – yang memperbaiki computer itu)
Jack himself gave me the book.

Catatan:

Berhati-hatilah dengan penggunaan kata gantu jenis ini. Perhatikan 3 contoh kalimat di bawah ini dan perhatikan perbedaannya.

Alex does the test himself. (= Alex mengerjakan test itu sendiri – tanpa bantuan orang lain)
Ted himself does the test. (=Ted sendirilah – bukan orang lain – yang mengerjakan test itu)
Bob does the test by himself. (= Bob mengerjakan test itu sendirian – tidak ada orang lain bersama dia)

9. Reciprocal Pronouns

Yaitu kata ganti yang menyatakan hubungan timbale balik antara 2 atau lebih.

Frase yang digunakan adalah:

Each other = satu sama lain (2 orang)
One another = satu sama lain ( lebih dari 2 orang)

Preposition (Kata Depan) adalah kata yang tidak dapat berubah bentuknya dan biasanya di letakkan di depan kata benda atau padanan kata benda lainnya (objek) yang bertujuan untuk menunjukkan hubungannya tertentu dengan kata-kata lain dalam kalimat.

Di bawah ini adalah contoh Kata Depan (Preposition)

PREPOSITION DI AKHIR KALIMAT

Hindari meletakkan sebuah kata depan di akhir kalimat.Karena kata depan sebaiknya di depan kata benda

Contoh:

That is a situation I have not thought of. (SALAH)
She is a person I cannot cope with. (SALAH)
It is behaviour I will not put up with. (SALAH)

Kalau Anda terbentur pada posisi kata depan yang menurut Anda harus diletakkan di akhir kalimat, maka pindahkan posisinya pada tempat yang tepat dan tidak merubah makna kalimat yang ingin Anda sampaikan.

Contoh:

That is a situation of which I have not thought.
She is a person with whom I cannot cope.
It is behaviour up with which I will not put.

Namun cara yang terbaik adalah dengan mengganti kata agar tidak membingungkan pembaca. Tapi perlu diingat, penggantian kata tersebut tidak merubah makna dan memiliki arti yang sama dengan kata yang ingin kita gantikan. Perhatikan contoh berikut ini untuk menggantikan contoh kalimat di atas.

Contoh:

That is a situation I have not considered.
It is behaviour I will not tolerate.

PILIHAN ANDA

Kesimpulannya, jika Anda tidak dapat menemukan kata pengganti yang cocok untuk menggantikan kata depan yang berada di akhir kalimat, maka Anda dapat memilihnya yaitu tetap meletakkan kata depan tersebut di akhir kalimat, atau merubah susunan kata depan tersebut. Kalimat pertama di bawah ini secara teknis tidak tepat karena kata depan berada di akhir kalimat. Namun kalimat yang kedua kedengarannya agak aneh dan dapat membingungkan pembaca.

She is a person I cannot cope with.
She is a person with whom I cannot cope.

Kebanyakan orang yang memahami masalah ini, mereka menggunakan kalimat yang kedua. Tapi memang lebih baik jika kita dapat menggantikan kata tersebut dengan kata yang lain yang memiliki arti yang sama dan tidak akan merubah makna kalimat tersebut, lebih baik menggantinya dengan kata lain yang lebih tepat agar lebih mudah dipahami pembaca.

APA YANG MENGIKUTI KATA DEPAN?

Kata setelah kata depan disebut sebagai "Object of the Preposition".

Contoh:

The cat ran under the car.
(Kata "the car" adalah objek dari "under".)
Can you give this parcel to him tomorrow?
(Kata "him" adalah objek dari "to".)

Kata Depan dapat juga berada di depan kata ganti (Pronouns) selain kata benda.

Contoh:

Can you give the parcel to him?
I went to the cinema with them.

Namun kata "whom" merupakan objective case dari "who", dan hal ini dapat membingungkan pembaca.

Contoh:

Andy saw the scouts, at least one of whom was armed, through the mist.
Against whom did you protest if there was nobody present?

Adalah phrase yang digunakan/berfungsi sebagai adverb, yakni menerangkan kata kerja.

Contoh:

He shouted on house top.
Henry fishes in the big lake.
He put the money into his pocket.

Adverbial Phrase dapat juga digunakan untuk menyatakan (mengekspresikan) beberapa hubungan; seperti mengekspresikan hubungan waktu (expressing a relation of time), place (tempat), manner (cara), degree (tingkat/derajat), cause (sebab akibat), purpose (tujuan/maksud), condition (syarat), atau concession or contrast (pertentangan).

Perhatikan contoh-contoh kalimat berikut ini:

1. Menunjukkan Hubungan Waktu.

She has been ill since two days ago,
We have been studying English for three years.

2. Menunjukkan Hubungan Tempat.

I live near the school.
He hurried into the classroom.
The children's toys were all over the room.

3. Menunjukkan Hubungan Cara.

He cut it with a knife.
She writes an angry letter in red ink.

4. Menunjukkan Hubungan Tingkat.

I love her very much.
You must study English more diligently.

5. Menunjukkan Hubungan Sebab Akibat.

She was injured because of the bus accident.
I was late because of the rain.
Your father is very angry with you for staying out so late.

6. Menunjukkan Hubungan Tujuan.

She has come to tell you the latest news.
I leave for Jakarta to buy some books.

7. Menunjukkan Hubungan Pertentangan.

In spite of the rain he went out.
Regardless of the weather she always brings an umbrella.

Berdasarkan kata-kata pendahuluannya (introductory words or pivot word) phrase dapat diklasifikasikan menjadi 4 macam, yaitu:

1. Prepositional Phrase.

1. Prepositional Phrase

Adalah ungkapan yang mengandung prepos^'isi (kata depan); dan biasanya dapat dipakai/berfungsi sebagai Noun, Adjective atau. Adverb. Contoh:

The report will be sent in a few days.
He is sometimes angry with his wife.
I'm sorry for having come late.
The traffic sign points to the left.

2. Principial Phrase

Adalah ungkapan yang mengandung participle yang biasanya berfungsi sebagai adjective.

Not knowing anyone in town he felt very lonesome.
Having finished his assignment, he went home.
Having lost all my money, I went home.
Student arriving late will not be permitted to enter the lecture hall. (Arriving late menjelaskan student.)
We heard the children crying.

Arti atau pengertian dari kalimat yang mengandung Participial Phrase dapat menunjukkan:

1. Waktu

a. After (sesudah)

· Having finished all the work, she went home. (Setelah dia menyelesaikan semua pekerjaan, dia pulang.)

b. While or When ( = ketika)

· Walking along the street, I met a friend whom I had not seen for along time. (Ketika saya berjalan sepanjang jalan, saya bertemu teman yang telah lama saya tidak berjumpa.)

2. Sebab Akibat

· Having worked hard all his life, he decided to take a long vacation. (Karena dia telah bekerja keras sepanjang hidupnya, maka dia memutuskan untuk mengambil liburan panjang)

Tetapi kadang-kadang dapat juga menunjukkan pengertian waktu dan sebab bersamasama.

· Having eaten too much, he became sleepy. (Karena dia makan terlalu banyak, dia jadi mengantuk)

Perhatikan beberapa contoh berikut:

· Needing some money to buy a book, Ali cashed a check. (= Because he needed some money to buy a book, Ali chased a check.)

· Being unable to afford a car, she bought a bicycle. Unable to afford a car, she bought a bicycle. (= Because she was unable to afford a car, she bought a bicycle.)

3. Infinitive Phrase

Adalah ungkapan yang mengandung infinitive dan infinitive phrase dapat digunakan/berfungsi sebagai Noun, Adjective atau Adverb.

a. Infinitive phrase sebagai Noun

To read books means to enlarge one's horizons.
To see his children again will make him happy.
To learn English, you must practice everyday.
To ask more money would be wrong.
To do that is difficult for me.

b. Infinitive phrase sebagai Adjective

He wanted books to juggle acrobatically.
The poison was strong enough to have killed ten people.
He is a good man for you to know.

c. Infinitive phrase sebagai Adverb

He read to enlarge his horizons.
He has been warned not to do that again.
I had hoped to see her soon.

a. Gerund Phrase

Adalah ungkapan yang mengandung gerund, dan biasanya hanya berfungsi sebagai Noun.

Reading books enlarge one's horizons.
Playing with guns is dangerous.
Taking a long walk every day is good exercise.
Her cleaning the house every day is not necessary.
The broadcasting by that station comes from the top of a skyscraper.

b. Appositive Phrase

Sebagai pelengkap pembahasan tentang Phrases, berikut ini diuraikan jenis phrases lain yaitu: Appositive Phrases, yang sangat besar peranannya dalam penyusunan kalimat dalam bahasa Inggris.

Appositive Phrases yaitu sekelompok kata yang berfungsi memberi keterangan tambahan kepada subjek atau objek.

Appositive Phrases dapat berupa noun, adjective, adverb, atau prepositional phrases.

Noun: He had asked Mr. Wilson, a prominent lawyer, to represent him in court.

Adjective: The professor, unaware that many of his students were
asleep, went right on lecturing.

Adverb: The gentleman over there by the door is our accountant.

Prepositional phrase: Mr. Harris, in a hurry to get home, a took a taxi from the airport.

Susunan Kalimat dengan Appositive Phrases

1. Perubahan Adjective Clause menjadi Appositive Phrase

Adjective clauses yang mengandung bentuk Be dapat disingkat menjadi Appositive Phrase dengan hanya mempertahankan pelengkap (complement) sesudah Be (noun, adjective, adverb atau preposition at phrases).

The young man, who is now a lawyer in a large firm, has lost much of his old ambition. Menjadi: The young man, now a lawyer in a large firm, has lost mush of his old ambition.

The person who is responsible for the damage will have to pay for it. Menjadi: The person responsible for the damage will have to pay for it.

2. Letak Appositive Phrase dalam Kalimat

Letak Appositive Phrase yang paling umum adalah sesudah noun yang diterangkan olehnya, dan terletak di antara dua tanda koma.

His uncle, a proud and unbending man, refused all help that was offered him.
Ahmad, eager to get ahead in his career, worked hard day and night.
The man, aware that he had mad a mistake, tried to correct it.
The high-powered computer machine, the most powerful of its type, was finally readied for use.

Namun Appositive Phrase yang mengacu (menerangkan) subjek dari main verb dapat pula diletakkan di awal kalimat atau di akhir kalimat.

· Di Awal Kalimat

o A proud and unbending man, his uncle refused all help that was offered him.

o Eager to get ahead in his career, Charles worked hard day and night. (Pada posisi seperti ini, appositive phrase sering mengekspresikan sebab akibat, kadang-kadang kelonggaran.)

· Di Akhir Kalimat

o Charles worked hard day and night, eager to get ahead in his career.

Kalimat aktif merupakan kalimat yang subjek kalimatnya adalah pelaku sebuah tindakan, sedangkan kalimat pasif adalah kalimat yang subjeknya bukan pelaku suatu tindakan. Si subjek adalah si penerima akibat dari sebuah tindakan.

Bandingkan kalimat-kalimat berikut:

Aktif : Susi mengetik surat ini kemarin
Pasif : Surat ini diketik oleh Susi kemarin
Aktif : Kucingku membunuh seekor tikus
Pasif : Seekor tikus dibunuh oleh kucingku

Catatan:

Gunakan bentuk pasif jika pelaku tindakan tidak begitu penting.

Contoh:

· Menara ini dibangun tahun 1955

Kalau kita perlu menyebut siapa pelaku suatu tindakan, gunakan kata oleh (by)

Contoh:

· Menara ini telah dibangun oleh Pemerintah Daerah pada tahun 1955

Rumus umum untuk membentuk suatu kalimat Pasif

Aktif : S + Verb (Kata Kerja) + Objek + dll
Pasif : Objek + to be + Verb 3 (Kata Kerja Bentuk III) ( + by subjek) + dll

To be yang digunakan

Present : is, am, are
Past : was, were
Perfect : been (di depan have, has, atau had)
Future : be (setelah modals)
Continuous : being (di depan salah satu dari 7 to be di atas)

Hal-hal yang perlu diketahui dan diingat

Untuk menyatakan suatu kalimat dalam bentuk pasif, tenses tidak berubah. Tenses harus sama dengan kalau kita menyatakannya dalam bentuk aktif. Yang berubah hanya kata kerja-nya.
Kata kerja yang tidak memiliki objek (Kata Kerja Intransitif) tidak dapat diubah menjadi kalimat pasif, seperti, menangis, mendidih, terbit, dll.

6) Passive Sentence with Nouns or Adjectives as Complements

Dalam kalimat pasif, jika pelaku terdiri dari ekspresi yang panjang, sebaiknya subjek tersebut ditempatkan di akhir kalimat setelah by.

Frase kata Depan biasanya tidak mempengaruhi perubahan antara Subjek dan kata Kerjanya.

Namun, ada juga yang membuatnya berubah.

A lot of people are traveling to Belize these days.
A lot of milk was left in the refrigerator last night.

Relative clause bisa membuat perubahan, tergantung pada arti dan maknanya.

Parallel Structures

Parallelism artinya kata-kata yang digunakan dalam rangkaian atau kelompok yang harus mempunyai bentuk yang sama secara grammar. Ketika kita menggunakan kata-kata atau frase yang dihubungkan dengan kata penghubung dalam sebuah rangkaian, maka bentuknya harus sama secara grammar. Perhatikan contoh berikut ini:

· Terry likes swimming and to dive. (Salah – tidak parallel)

· Terry likes swimming and diving. (Benar – parallel)

· Terry likes to swim and (to) dive. (Benar – parallel)

· I'm taking history, math, and chemical. (Salah – Chemical bukan kata benda)

Kadang-kadang kata-kata yang berulang-ulang seperti auxiliary verbs, dapat dihilangkan pada rangkaian selanjutnya.

2. Proper Nouns

Yaitu nama orang, tempat dan sebagainya yang khusus untuk dia saja. Proper Nouns selalu diawali dengan huruf kapital.

("Uncle" diawali dengan huruf kapital karena kata tersebut sudah menjadi bagian dari namanya.)

3. Collective Nouns

Berupa manusia (people), binatang (animals) dan suatu benda (things). Beberapa kata tertentu biasanya atau selalu digunakan untuk membuat collective nouns.

Catatan:

Bila Collective Nouns dianggap sebagai satu unit dan untuk kepentingan unit tersebut maka diperlakukan sebagai kata benda tunggal (singular noun).

Contoh:

The committee was formed to carry out the task.
(Panitia telah dibentuk untuk melaksanakan tugas itu).

Bila Collective Nouns dianggap sebagai sekumpulan para anggota, maka diperlakukan sebagai kata benda jamak (plural).

Contoh:

The jury were enable to agree on a verdict.
(Para juri tidak bisa menyetujui tentang hukuman itu. Artinya yang mengeluarkan pendapat adalah pribadi para anggota jury itu).

4. Material Nouns

Yaitu nama yang menunjukkan nama benda yang terjadi dengan sendirinya dan bukan buatan manusia.

5. Compound Nouns

Yaitu yang merupakan gabungan dari dua kata atau lebih.

PERHATIAN

Berikut ini adalah beberapa kesalahan sehubungan dengan Kata Benda (Nouns):

1. Bukan Huruf Kapital

Common nouns tidak diawali dengan huruf Kapital (kecuali di awal kalimat atau merupakan bagian dari sebuah Titel).

The corporal disobeyed a direct Order. (SALAH)
("order" adalah common noun - tidak huruf kapital)
It is the largest Church in Birmingham. (SALAH)
("church"adalah common noun - tidak huruf kapital)

2. Huruf Kapital Hanya Untuk Kata-kata yang Bersifat Dasar

Ketika sebuah nama terdiri dari "the", "of", "an" atau "in", maka ka. ta-kata tersebut tidak huruf kapital

I must visit the Tower of London. (BENAR)
("of" bukan kata dasar - tidak huruf kapital. BUKAN: Tower Of London)
Have you seen Day of the Jackal? (BENAR)
("of" dan "the" are bukan kata dasar - tidak huruf kapital. BUKAN: Day Of The Jackal)

3. Tunggal atau Jamak?

Penulis kadangkala ragu apakah kata Collective Noun yang dipakainya berfungsi sebagai tunggal atau jamak. Nah, untuk itu, kita harus memahami betul makna kalimatnya.

That team wins the league. (BENAR)
(yang menang adalah tim tersebut, bukan masing-masing anggota tim)
The team wear new uniform. (BENAR)
(yang memakai baju seragam adalah masing-masing anggota tim tersebut)

Perhatikan lagi catatan Collective Nouns di atas

Membentuk Jamak dari Compund Nouns (Kata Benda Jamak)

Untuk membentuk Jamak dari Kata Benda Majemuk, maka jamakkan saja kata dasar dari kata benda majemuk tersebut. Kalau kata benda majemuk terseubt membingungkan, maka tambahkan "s" atau "es" di akhir kata benda majemuk tersebut.

Mothers-in-law

Kata seperti "spoonful", "plateful" dan "cupful" beda dengan peraturan di atas. Kata-kata tersebut tinggal ditambahkan "s" pada akhir kata tersebut, walaupun kata dasarnya adalah "spoon", "plate" dan "cup".

Membentuk Jamak Pada Kata Benda

1. Tambahkan "s" pada kata benda tunggal

Contoh:

door - doors
cat - cats
bird - birds

2. Tambahkan "es" pada kata benda yang berakhiran bunyi desis seperti "s, ss, x, z, ch, dan sh"

Contoh:

bush - bushes
bus - buses

3. Tambahkan "es" pada kata benda tunggal yang berakhiran huruf "o"

5. Tambahkan "s" untuk kata benda yang berakhiran "oo", "io", "oe" dan "yo".

6. Tambahkan "s" pada beberapa kata benda yang berakhiran "o" yang didahului oleh huruf konsonan.

Contoh:

7. Ganti "y" menjadi "i" lalu ditambah dengan "es" pada kata benda tunggal yang berakhiran "y"

Contoh:

baby - babies
lady - ladies
city - cities

8. Tambahkan "s" pada kata benda tunggal yang diakhiri dengan "y" tetapi didahului huruf vokal.

Contoh:

boy - boys
toy - toys
day - days

9. Kata benda tunggal yang berakhiran "f" atau "fe", ubah menjadi "ves"

Contoh:

Calf - calves
wife - wives
knife - knives
wolf - wolves

10. Ada juga beberapa kata benda tunggal yang berakhiran "f" hanya ditambahkan "s". Kata benda tersebut seperti hoof, chief, cliff, gulf, roof, proof, dwarf, reef, scarf, turf, grief, safe, dan strife.

dwarf - dwarfs
safe - safes

11. Untuk membentuk kata benda majemuk, silahkan kembali lihat penjelasan kata benda majemuk.

12. Sejumlah kata benda memiliki bentuk kata benda yang tidak beraturan.

Contoh:

mouse - mice

13. Tambahkan "en" atau "ne" pada kata benda seperti ox, xhild, brother, dan cow

Contoh:

ox - oxen

brother - brotheren (brothers)

14. Ada juga beberapa kata benda yang bentuk jamaknya sama dengan bentuk tunggalnya.

Contoh:

swine - swine
deer - deer
sheep - sheep
fish - fish

Kadangkala kita menjumpai fishes, itu berarti menunjukkan jenis ikannya yang banyak. Kalau jumlah ikannya banyak, tetapi masih satu jenis ikan, maka gunakan fish.

15. Kata benda nama diri (Proper Nouns) yang berakhiran "s", maka bentuk jamaknya sama dengan bentuk tunggal.

Balinese - Balinese
species - species
dll

16. Ada juga kata benda yang tidak memiliki bentuk tunggalnya.

Contoh:

glasses, arms, scissors, pliers, trousers, shoes, shorts, clothes, bellows, dsb.

17. Ada juga kata benda yang berakhiran "ics" yang berarti ilmu pengetahuan, dan beberapa kata benda yang berakhiran "s" tidak memiliki bentuk jamak.

Contoh:

mathematics, physics, politics, news, optics, gallows, billiards, statistics, dsb.

18. Kata benda serapan dari bahasa asing, memiliki bentuk jamak yang berbeda.

Contoh:

antenna - antennae
apparatus - apparatus
alumnus - alumni
datum - data
focus - foci
formula - formulae
genius - genii
index - indices
stratum - strata

Untuk membentuk jamak dari kata serapan bahasa Latin, perhatikan caranya sebagai berikut:

Kata benda yang berakhiran huruf "a", maka ubah menjadi "ae". Contoh. nebula - nebulae
Kata benda yang berakhiran "us", maka ubah menjadi "i". Contoh: radius - radii
Kata benda yang berakhiran "um", ubah menjadi "a". Contoh: bacterium - bacteria
Kata benda yang berakhiran "x", ubah menjadi "ices" atau "ces". Contoh: vortex - vortices, crux - cruces

Untuk membentuk jamak dari kata serapan bahasa Yunani, perhatikan caranya sebagai berikut:

Kata benda berakhiran "sis", ubah menjadi "ses". Contoh: thesis - theses
Kata benda beakhiran "on", ubah menjadi "a". Contoh: ganglion - ganglia
Kata benda berakhiran "ma", ditambah dengan "ta". Contoh: carcinoma - carcinomata
Kata benda yang berakhiran "x", ubah menjadi "ges". Contoh: larynx - laringes

Perubahan kata benda serapan lainnya ke dalam bentuk jamak, secara singkat dapat dilihat pada contoh berikut ini:

Namun, ada juga kata benda serapan dalam bentuk jamaknya telah mengikuti bentuk jamak Bahasa Inggris pada umumnya, yaitu dengan menambahkan "s" atau "es".
